Sweden-based Furhat Robotics acquires the business assets of Misty Robotics to accelerate development of next-generation social robots.
Boulder, CO – January 17th, 2022 – Misty Robotics today announces that the company is acquired by Furhat Robotics, the Swedish company behind the world’s most advanced social robot, ‘Furhat’. Furhat Robotics will continue to support the Misty Robotics brand and all of Misty’s customers, and empower future Misty robots through the strength of their technology. For Misty’s existing customers, nothing will change apart from the exciting addition of an extended community and more knowledge and research available.
“We couldn’t have found a better company to join forces with than Furhat Robotics,” says Misty Robotics Founder, Ian Bernstein. “We both share the vision of robots in all of our lives, robots helping with not only the dull, difficult, and dangerous tasks but ones that become our companions and make technology more accessible. Samer and the entire team at Furhat are incredibly talented and I’m confident that together we will be able to greatly accelerate the field of social robotics based on the combined work of both teams.”
Pioneers of human-robotics technology, Furhat Robotics was founded in Sweden in 2014 as a spin-off from research at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. They are the creators behind the Furhat platform, an award-winning social robot with a highly expressive and customizable face.
The acquisition establishes an American base of operations for Furhat Robotics, who is already working with US brands including Disney, Intel, Accenture and Facebook, as well as academic institutions including Stanford, Northeastern and many others. Furhat Robotics Co-founder and CEO, Samer Al Moubayed, who previously worked as a Pittsburgh-based research scientist for Disney Imagineering, and researched social robotics and conversational AI at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Sweden, will share his time between Furhat’s Stockholm headquarters and the Misty Robotics offices in Boulder, Colorado. Ian Bernstein and Tim Enwall from Misty Robotics will join Furhat’s advisory board, and other senior team members from Misty Robotics will join the Furhat management team.
“Misty is an incredibly well designed and engineered robot! We have admired the work of the Misty Robotics team over the past years and their focus on developers, so to be joining forces is an exciting moment for everyone at Furhat, and I believe for the whole social robotics industry” says CEO and Co-founder of Furhat Robotics, Samer Al Moubayed. “We know that the next few years will be pivotal for our dream to bring social robots closer to people’s lives. This rare event in bringing together the forces of two of the leading social robotics companies in the world is going to give us much stronger capabilities to move faster towards that dream. What Ian, Tim, and the team have built, during a few very difficult years under Covid, is a huge feat, and having them join Furhat is game changing for us. I’m very proud and happy to welcome everyone from Misty to Furhat.”
Since the launch of the first Furhat robot in 2014, Furhat Robotics has seen a steady yearly growth of sold robots within both academia and the corporate sector. In 2021, more than 1,000 users from 45 different countries were welcomed to the Furhat community, empowering them to effortlessly interact, communicate, and emotionally engage with free-thinking technology during the pandemic.
